Since the early 1980's Shihan Trevor Smith has been developing his own style of martial art with a predominance of traditional Japanese Ju Jitsu and Karate with a good bit of Judo mixed in. Shihan has developed the style for the school by travelling and training with many other clubs and styles until he was able to refine the core techniques taught and the school. This web site identifies many of those techniques but only dedication to training at the school can teach the disciplines of applying those techniques to the very practical form of the Bendigo Ryu style. |

On October 3rd 2009 Shihan Trevor Smith was the Uki (crash test dummy) for O-Sensei Alexey Kunin. Soke Dave Franklin from Dave Franklin Martial Arts Invited O-Sensei to visit Australia and run a one day session in Werribee. As well as demonstrations on many hard core Jujitsu techniques there was a very interesting session on the history of Jujitsu and grading presentations. Shihan has Uki for many of O-Sensei's favourite tricks and survived the day with only one black eye and less than a hand full of bruises. Katrin Wilhelm from the Bendigo Ryu school also attended and got away unscathed. The seminar was a great success with around 100 Jujitsu exponents attending. Many of whom are very well known in the Jujitsu world. Thank you to Soke Dave Franklin and his assistants for the effort and the opportunity to take part and play such an honored role. |

Jujutsu (from the Japanese 柔術 jūjutsu listen (help·info)meaning "gentle/yielding/compliant art") is a Japanese martial art whose central ethos is to yield to the force provided by an opponent's attack in order to apply counter techniques from the resultant ensuing situation. There are many ryu (styles) of the art which leads to a diversity of approaches. Jujutsu ryu may utilize all techniques to some degree (i.e. throwing, trapping, locking, holding down, grappling, gouging, biting, disengagements, striking, and kicking). Generally jujutsu ryu make limited use of strikes since they were predominantly developed in feudal Japan under the auspices of the samurai warrior class. The techniques evolved to become effective against armed opponents wearing bamboo body armor to protect vital parts of the face, throat, and body. In addition to jujutsu, many schools taught the use of weapons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jujutsu | |
